Specialty Wire for Unique Applications
TEMPERATURE MEASUREMENT
Concept Alloys’ thermoelectric alloys are used primarily in the construction of various types of thermocouples that are employed in the measurement of temperatures from -300 °F in excess of 5200 °F. These alloys are also used in thermopiles and other electric producing devices.
A wide variety of alloy combinations are available including the long accepted industry standard Chromel®and Alumel® and Concept Alloys’ Tungsten-Rhenium alloy combinations for extremely high temperatures.
Concept Alloys stands alone when it comes to thermocouple alloy knowledge and expertise. We are able to meet the most demanding challenges based on decades of experience melting, processing and testing a wide variety of alloys, such as the renowned Chromel-P and Alumel alloys and Concept Alloys’ Tungsten-Rhenium alloy combinations. Second to none application advice, technical support and product development assistance are available to all customers.
Chromel and Alumel are registered trademarks of Concept Alloys, Inc.
TANTALUM TUBING
Tantalum is one of the refractory metals. Its melting point of 5425°F (2996°C) is exceeded only by osmium, rhenium, tungsten, and carbon. Due to its workability, high temperature strength, corrosion resistance, and excellent thermal conductivity, tantalum tubing can be a good choice for thermocouple protection tubes for many applications from room temperature to over 5000°F (2760°C), depending upon the atmosphere. Operation at elevated temperatures in oxygen, nitrogen or hydrogen environments should be avoided due to embrittlement.
MEDICAL WIRE and TUBING
Concept Alloys produces wire and tubing for medical applications, specializing in the use of our expertise with refractory metals.
Concept Alloys’ medical wire and tubing is suitable for a wide range of applications, primarily for various surgeries. The size range, ductility and specific size/shape quality properties of Concept Alloys’ tungsten-rhenium enables our medical wire and tubing to be customized for specific cardiovascular and diagnostic applications.
ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE
Concept Alloys’ Chromel Alloy 126 was developed to be chemically compatible with nickel base thermocouple alloys while providing the best possible protection at high temperatures in oxidizing environments. It can be used for long-term continuous exposure to combustion gases or air at temperatures up to 2300°F (1260°C).
Chromel A is an alloy used at operating temperatures up to 2150 °F (1200°C). Its 80%Ni/20%Cr gives good oxidation resistance especially under conditions of frequent switching or wide temperature fluctuations. It’s low temperature coefficient of resistance ensures fast heat-up times and stable operating temperatures over it’s entire range of use.
Chromel C is an alloy used at operating temperatures up to 1850°F (1030°C). It is a non-magnetic alloy made from nickel, chromium and iron that has a high electrical resistivity and superb resistance to oxidation at medium to high temperatures. It is a lower cost alternative to Chromel-A for medium temperature ranges.
Chromel D is an alloy used at operating temperatures up to 1850 °F (1030°C). It is a non-magnetic alloy made from nickel, chromium and iron that has a lower electrical resistivity than Chromel C but improved resistance to the selective oxidation of chromium.
CORROSION & HEAT RESISTANCE
Tantalum is one of the refractory metals. Its melting point of 5425°F (2996° C) is exceeded only by tungsten, rhenium and carbon.
Due to its workability, high temperature strength, corrosion resistance, and excellent thermal conductivity, tantalum tubing can be a good choice for thermocouple protection tubes for many applications from room temperature to over 5000°F, depending upon the atmosphere. Continuous operation in air should be limited to a maximum temperature of about 750°F. In vacuum, tantalum can be safely used to 5000°F.
Concept Alloys’ Chromel 126 (formerly Hoskins’ Alloy 126) was developed to be chemically compatible with nickel base thermocouple alloys while providing the best possible protection at high temperatures in oxidizing environments.
Chromel 126 provides resistance to oxidation at temperatures of 1750°F (955°C) and above that is virtually unmatched by any other wrought heat-resistant alloy. It can be used for long-term continuous exposure to combustion gases or air at temperatures up to 2300°F (1260°C), and, for short-term exposures, it can be used at even higher temperatures. Useful short-term oxidation resistance has even been demonstrated at temperatures as high as 2400°F (1315°C).
SPECIAL ALLOYS
Our experience, failure analysis, lab, and manufacturing capabilities provide the perfect combination to help customers develop new products.
We offer over 100 combined years of applicable experience in failure analysis, lab support, applications, consulting and manufacturing relating to alloys and composites. Our internal capabilities are expanded with a network of global partners to accommodate specialty needs and applications you may have. We produce a narrow range of “standard” products, and we specialize in unique, high-performance alloy development for demanding applications and low volume production of hard-to-get alloys.
FAILURE ANALYSIS & LAB SERVICES
What sets Concept Alloys apart from other testing labs is our ability to provide solutions to materials questions. That means more than a test report.
Our knowledge and experience in analysis techniques and interpretation of results separates us from other laboratories, however producing accurate data and information is only part of the process. Equally important is our commitment to assist each client in understanding and applying results to the question or problem at hand.
